Words to the Waves

With regret and unspoken promises, she attempts to connect through the sea.

Today’s challenge is to create a story using the random word “cousin.” I am thinking of my cousin as I write this story. I have given up opportunities to connect with her, and then she passed away.

‘Pleeeaaaaase, Stace, come with me.’

Stacey didn’t, and the ocean took Gertrude away.

Stacey now whispers what she would have spoken to her cousin into the sea; the waves carry her words.

Stacey’s gaze remained fixed on the horizon, hoping to glimpse the girl she loved but neglected.

The waves respond with a mournful chastise, filling her brain with a valid accusation.

You never joined Gertrude — not once. Why come now? Yuh late.

“I want to keep the promise I had never made,” Stacey shouts back.

Hearing Stacey’s lament, the tourists quickly widen the arc around her and move away.

Thanks for the prompt Grim Flandango.

Hope Through Struggles is right, I think:

“Life rarely unfolds exactly as we anticipate.”
