This line caused me to linger.
This weekend, my son was visiting from college. He could have challenged a representative, someone older than him, who gave less than good customer service. He had an opportunity to receive $100 credit if only he would say something...protest. He did not.
The learned behavior of not talking back to your elders stops his retort. The rules of engagement render him mute.
I found myself wondering, “What have I taught him?” “When does the flip from child to man occur for a Black young person in America?” and "Is a Black man ever at liberty to defend himself with fervor?"
Thank you for this story.
