I have done this. I’ve said, ‘Gracias’ in Spanish spaces or ‘Gamsahamnida’ in Korean spaces. My younger son corrected me on this. I was not sensitive to how it makes the people in those spaces feel like ‘other’ and perhaps feel cornered into giving me a strained smile without mirth and nodding as if I did something nice for them.
